Mazdaspeed 6 Sport Wagon
Welcome to Imagination Land
One of our favorite things to do is dream up wagons that never were. This isn’t really a hard thing to do: just take a decent wagon, add in a high-performance factory drivetrain, and modify as you see fit. The results of this little mental exercise usually result in the desire to buy a garage and get to work.
For today’s mental exercise, in keeping with JDM wagon week, we picked the Mazdaspeed 6 Sport Wagon. This creation is fairly straightforward in concept, but much more difficult in creation. Starting with a stock Mazda 6 Sport Wagon, swap the engine, transmission, and all-wheel drive system from Mazdaspeed 6 sedan. The 2.3L engine and transmission is one challenge, but the all-wheel drive system would be much harder. Yet we have no doubt it can be done, as the engine bay is clearly big enough to transition from a 6 to a 4 cylinder, and Mazda made an AWD ‘6 Wagon for its domestic market.
The results would be epic: a 274 horsepower turbocharged, 6-speed manual, all-wheel drive grocery-getter. And you’d have the market cornered on exclusivity.
What’s your favorite wagon that never was? Perhaps a Mazdaspeed Protégé 5 Wagon? Or a BMW M3 Touring (although, there is at least one of those)? Maybe a Volvo V50R, or a Ford Taurus SHO Wagon (C&D was all over that)? Hit up our Facebook page and submit your ideas.
