Supra Powered Datsun 510 Wagon
To kick off our new Modified Wagon’s section, we couldn’t think of a better example than this exceptionally custom Datsun 510 Wagon. With a turbocharged 2JZ-GTE engine from a Toyota Supra, this Datsun is our kind of hybrid.
The details of this olive drab beast are quite impressive, and only get better as you dig deeper. Over 400 horsepower, under 2600 lbs, rear-wheel drive with a limited slip diff and a manual tranny.
Based on a 1971 Datsun 510 Wagon, this 5-door is literally a hybrid: A Datsun frame and body, a Toyota engine, a Ford rear end, Dodge Viper brakes, Corvette rotors, and a Mercedes-Benz C-Class console. This beautiful amalgamation is truly the essence of a custom tuning project, rather than a high-dollar pre-packaged solution from a big name tuner.
In the engine compartment, this is no ordinary 2JZ-GTE. With a GT35R turbo, air-to-air intercooling, 550cc fuel injectors, and a Turbosmart wastegate, by our estimates this sinister wagon should scoot to sixty in under 5 seconds and blast through the quarter somewhere in the mid-13s. Anthony, this car’s engineer and master tech, also fabricated a custom intake manifold and exhaust to help her breathe and exhale.
Suspension and braking also benefit from the brilliance of Anthony’s tuning mind. When tackling such an unconventional project as a Supra-powered Datsun Wagon, you’ve got to have the ingenuity of Macgyver, and Anthony clearly does. This wagon sports Brembo rotors from a first generation Viper matched with C5 Corvette rotors for track-worthy stopping power. Some Datsun homogeneity remains, as coils and struts come from a 280ZX, and those sweet fender flares are off of a 240ZX.
Best of all, this car gets driven, and driven properly. This Supra-powered animal gets flogged around the track frequently, and has doubtlessly commands respect wherever it goes.
